The castle itself was founded by Roger de Montogomery on Christmas Day in 1067 and he actually became the first person to hold the earldom of the town Arundel by William the Conqueror. The castle was very badly damaged during the time of the English Civil War but they managed to restore it to its former glory in the 18th and 19th centuries.
